Sci Fi Movie Premieres This Week:

Blockbusters take a break this week as there are no major films scheduled or even any limited releases set to hit theaters, though for those interested, the family entry Minions & Monsters will have its premiere on Friday. This last Spring’s hit film Project Hail Mary already started streaming on MGM+ earlier this week, but it was just announced that one will also arrive on Prime Video on Friday. Also hitting streaming is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy which has its premiere on HBO Max on Friday. And Obsession, one of this Summer’s biggest indie hits, became available on VOD on Tuesday. You can see highlights for this week below, and you can see the schedule of all the current and upcoming sci fi and fantasy movies at this link.

Project Hail Mary (Streaming-Prime Video, July 3rd): Ryland Grace is a school-teacher-turned-astronaut who wakes up from a coma, alone, on a space station with no memory of who he is or his mission. His memory returns in bursts and he pieces together that he was sent to the Tau Ceti solar system, 12 light-years from Earth, to reverse the impact of a space event that had already hurled our planet into the early stages of an Ice Age. As details of the mission unravel, Grace must call on all of his scientific training and sheer ingenuity, but he might not have to do it alone…

Directed by: Phil Lord, Chris Miller

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Drew Goddard, Nikki Baida, Milana Vayntrub, Lucy Kitada, Ken Kao

Obsession (On Demand, June 30th): After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.

Directed by: Curry Barker

Starring: James Harris, Inde Navarrette, Megan Lawless, Haley Nicole Johnson, Andy Richter, Christian Mercuri

Sci Fi Movie News of Note:

Forbidden Planet gets a 4K UHD release

The classic sci fi movie Forbidden Planet will be getting the 4K UHD treatment with a new restoration from the original 35mm negative. That film, which starred Leslie Nielsen, Walter Pidgeon, and Anne Francis, was a seminal work in the genre and had a lasting influence, including on the Star Trek: TOS. Extras will include a new audio commentary by film historians Kim Newman and Barry Forshaw, a collector’s booklet, several archival documentaries, the bonus film The Invisible Boy which features Robbie the Robot, and more. Release date is set for September 29th, and you can pre-order it at this link.

Hollywood is looking for its next Backrooms, and that may come with the horror film in the works Siren Head, inspired by a drawing of a unique-looking cryptid that went viral on the internet. The Hollywood Reporter describes the film as a “horror sensation created by creature designer Trevor Henderson that centers on a tall, rotting skeletal figure with, wait for it, two sirens as a head”. Zach Cregger (Barbarian) is working on the script with Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You), and the latter will direct. This will likely be targetting a 2027 or 2028 release.
