News coming out of San Diego Comic-Con seemed to be on the light side this year, but we did get some breaking news and updates of interest concerning sci-fi and fantasy movies and TV shows. Sci-Fi Movie News
Ghost Rider will be revving up in the MCU, as a new film featuring the character is in the works. Ryan Gosling (Project Hail Mary) will be playing Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider, with Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) directing and Jonathan Tropper (Star Wars: Starfighter) penning the script. No details about the movie are available at this time, but this will act as the introduction of the character to the MCU films. Ghost Rider previously appeared on the big screen in 2007 and 2011, with Nicolas Cage in the lead role, but those films were not part of the MCU and were not well received. We also saw the Robbie Reyes version of the character, played by Gabriel Luna, on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.—and there were plans for a spin-off series—but that show is not considered part of the MCU continuity, even though it did have links to the movies. A release window has not been given for the new movie, but expect it to arrive no earlier than 2028.
Black Panther will be returning to the big screen, with a new actor taking over the lead role. David Jonsson will be donning the suit as the son of T’Challa, introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and taking up the mantle of the hero from his father. Letitia Wright will be returning as Shuri, and Winston Duke will be back as M’Baku. Ryan Coogler will return to helm the film, and this one is currently on the schedule with a December 2028 release planned.
A sequel to the 2023 fantasy film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has been written, but it appears to be stuck in Development Hell at the moment. Writer/director Jonathan Goldstein had the following to say about it at Comic-Con:
We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons. We were hired to write it. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.
That D&D-based movie proved to be a disappointment at the box office, but it has since garnered a devoted following. And if the stars align correctly, perhaps the sequel could happen at some point.

Sci-Fi TV News
Amazon has officially given the greenlight to series for Robocop which has been in production since 2024. Deadline gives the following description for the property:
In Robocop, a giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force – a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer.
Peter Ocko (Moonhaven) will be onboard as showrunner, James Wan (MEGAN) will be executive producing, and Blumhouse Atomic Monster will be the production company. A premiere window for this has not been set yet, but since they have been working on if for a while, it could arrive as early as 2027.
Three of the Severance team are starting up a new project as Adam Scott, Ezra Claytan Daniels, and Eli Jorné will be adapting the graphic novel Shifter by Koren Shadmi for Hulu. Deadline gives the following description of the property:
It is set in the near-future, where a banned cosmetic procedure lets people change their faces on the fly, creating a new underground industry of Shifters, who can become anyone you want, for any purpose you can imagine, for a fee. Rose is making a name for herself as one of the best, but the more she gives to her gigs, the more she risks losing herself.
This project is only just ramping up, so expect a late-2027 premiere at best.
Apparently, more of the X-Men ’97 animated TV series is on the way, as producer Larry Houston has said that a fourth season is in the works, with more likely to follow:
If the show can at least replicate what I did with the original, five seasons would be great. Maybe even six. But it all depends on the audience and how well viewers receive the stories we tell.
The head of Marvel Animation, Brad Winderbaum, would like to see the show go even further, possibly as many as ten seasons. This is a direct continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, and the plan is for the new show to adapt stories that appeared in the comics after that one wrapped up. It has performed well for Disney+ so far, so it could stick around for a while.
The animated sci-fi comedy Futurama returns for its fourteenth season next month, and while it has not been officially renewed for a fifteenth season yet, Hulu has plenty more planned for the property. According to head writer David X. Cohen, they have three “XXXL-Sized” specials planned, starting with an extended Christmas-themed episode that will arrive in 2027. Not much additional information was provided, but fans of the show will be happy to know that more is on the way.
