Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.
Box Office Results
The latest DCU entry, Clayface, hit theaters this past weekend, premiering at the Number 1 slot with $24 million in domestic ticket sales. That is lower than the $37 million opening that Supergirl had before turning into a Summer flop, but Clayface is up against lower expectations. As an R-rated comic book-based movie, it does not have to pull in Blockbuster-level attendance, and it has a much lower budget of around $40 million (vs. $180 million for Supergirl). With global ticket sales for the film currently at $47 million, this one is on track to at least break even if not turn a profit in its theatrical run (a movie typically needs to make around twice its budget in domestic receipts or two and a half to three times that in global ticket sales to break even).
The animated fantasy Wildwood did not have as good of a start, landing at Number 3 in wide release with domestic receipts totaling $12 million. That one has a budget of $100 million and will likely lose money during its theatrical run. The romantic fantasy Wicker made it to the Number 5 slot for its premiere in considerably less theaters, pulling in $5.7 million across North American. With a budget of only $10 million, that one looks like it could turn a profit in its theatrical run, and it could also get expanded to more theaters this coming weekend. Street Fighter slipped to Number 4 in its second week, totaling only $8.6 million domestically after ticket sales dropped by over 70% from its premiere. That one is headed to flop status and could be leaving theaters soon. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 (and a few just outside) based on the weekend results.
