Premiere: In Theaters (Limited) December 5th
Directed by: Bryan Fuller
Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Sophie Sloan, Sigourney Weaver, David Dastmalchian
Bryan Fuller got his start in television, having worked on Star Trek: Deep Space 9 and Voyager, contributing the notable episodes “The Darkness and the Light” and “Empok Nor” to the former show and “Bride of Chaotica!” and “One Small Step” to the latter. He went on to create the idiosyncratic cult-favorites Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies, and he executive produced Heroes during its first and best season (penning the lauded episode “The Company Man”). Among his other television accomplishments is the Hannibal series which he would still like to return to at some point.
Fuller has since turned his attention to the big screen, and Dust Bunny will be his feature film premiere, with the description revealing plenty of his trademark quirkiness:
Ten-year-old Aurora has a mysterious neighbor who kills real-life monsters. He’s a hit man for hire. So, when Aurora needs help killing the monster she believes ate her entire family, she procures his services. Suspecting that her parents may have fallen victim to assassins gunning for him, Aurora’s neighbor guiltily takes the job. Now, to protect her, he’ll need to battle an onslaught of assassins — and accept that some monsters are real.
Not surprisingly, Fuller is reteaming with Mads Mikkelsen on this project, the person who proved that Anthony Hopkins is not the only one who can play Hannibal. In addition, longtime genre-favorite Sigourney Weaver will be onboard for a cast with a one-two punch.
Fuller told Variety that the story started as an episode of the 2020 revival of the Steven Spielberg series Amazing Stories:
In some ways, it’s Spielberg, a homage to those traumatic childhood films of the ’80s, like Poltergeist and, particularly, Gremlins. It was conceived and designed to be an Amazing Story story. But as we were developing it for Apple, it was getting noted to death, and there were a lot of stories that we had developed that weren’t moving forward in the process at Apple. So I was like, ‘You know what, this would be a great movie.’
The movie premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9th, and it currently has a 100% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Those who enjoy Fuller’s works should certainly be eager for its arrival in theaters.
