Sci Fi Movie News of Note

He’s back! Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced that he has several films in the works, two of which represent a return to his early sci fi and fantasy entries: Conan and Predator. For the former franchise–which helped launch him into stardom–Arnold has this to say about the planned King Conan film:
They don’t write them like I’m 40 years old. You write it to be age appropriate. I’ll still go in there and kick some ass but it will be different. With ‘King Conan,’ it’s a great old story that Conan was 40 years as king and now he gets forced out of the kingdom and there’s conflict, of course, but somehow he comes back and there’s all kinds of madness, violence, magic and creatures and stuff like that. And now, of course, there’s all kinds of special effects. The studio has plenty of money to make those movies really big so I’m looking forward to all of those projects.
That film has actually been in the works for years, and it finally looks like it might be moving forward with Christopher McQuarrie (Edge of Tomorrow, Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation) attached as writer and director. As for the new Predator film, Schwarzenegger will be working with Dan Trachtenberg who has revived the franchise with the films Prey and Predator: Badlands. No details are available on that one at this point. And there are also plans for a new Commando movie, so Arnold will be back in the theaters before long with some old favorites.
In casting news, Kate Winslet (Avatar: Fire and Ash) has been set as the female lead in the Andy Serkis-directed The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, though the specifics of her role have not been disclosed yet. That film is currently in production and targeting a 2027 premiere.
Queen guitarist Brian May will be contributing to the soundtrack of the upcoming Masters of the Universe. That band is well known for its soundtrack to 1980’s Flash Gordon, and May will likely bring some similar guitar flourishes to the He-Man movie. That film is directed by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) and is set for a June 6th premiere.
