Sci Fi TV News: Nathan Fillion Is Teasing a New Development with Firefly, Star Trek Producers Are Positive about Change at Paramount, and More

Sci Fi TV News: Weekly digest of the recent news and updates relating to sci fi and fantasy television.

Nathan Fillion has been teasing something over the past week or so, and it sure looks like he is getting the Firefly band back together. He has put up videos on Instagram where he has visited Morena Baccarin, Gina Torres, Summer Glau, Sean Maher, and Jewel Staite, and in each he tells them “it’s time”. In the post with Maher, the caption claims “Some of you have guessed convention, podcast, or cross-over. You are wrong.” In the one with Staite, he claims that an announcement will be made on March 15th. There is no information on what the announcement will be, but speculation is running rampant that a revival of Firefly is in the works, possibly an animated series or set of movies which Fillion previously suggested. I have seen nothing in Production Weekly to confirm this, so for now, we will have to wait and see what the announcement is on the 15th.

Paramount has undergone some changes since the merger with Skydance in 2025, and it appears that it will have a major impact on the Star Trek franchise. But Rod Roddenberry, who is Gene Roddenberry’s son and producer on the new shows, believes that the new regime will be good for Trek. In a recent interview with The Direct, he had this to say:

I’m a big fan of change, maybe not change just for the sake of change, but, dare I say, sometimes disruptive change for the better. I do think with the new regime, things will get better.

Trevor Roth, who is also one of the producers for the franchise, is hopeful as well that the changes at Paramount will be positive:

Our hope is that the new leadership understands or appreciates what we appreciate about ‘Star Trek’: that it is a wonderful piece of entertainment, that it can go beyond entertaining and talk about important issues to us today, and make people think, and allow for the intelligence of our audience to be recognized and appreciated. So, our hope is that they’ll just see what we see. And I think thus far, from what we can tell, they do.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy are in the process of winding down production, and nothing new is scheduled for the franchise at this point. But there are hopes that the Enterprise-related Star Trek: United and/or the Picard spin-off Star Trek: Legacy could go forward along with other projects.

The second season of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem is currently in the works, but it will have a shorter episode run than the show’s first year. The word is that only six episodes are planned and that the third and final season may be only 5 episodes. This is a cost-cutting measure because the show has been quite expensive at around $20 million per episode. The second season has wrapped production and should be arriving at some point in 2026

In further production news, Season 2 of FX’s Alien: Earth is set to start filming in May which should have it on target for a 2027 premiere. And season 3 of Netflix’s Wednesday has moved into production which could have that one aiming for a 2027 premiere as well. Also, filming for the pilot of Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files will begin in May. If the streamer picks that one up to series, it will likely be looking at a 2027 arrival. Meanwhile, Vince Gilligan has said that writing on Season 2 of Pluribus “is not going quite as fast as I would hope” suggesting it may be a while before that show returns.
