Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.
Box Office Results
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy got off to a decent start in its premiere week, landing at the Number 3 slot at the Box Office this past weekend and pulling in $13.5 million in domestic receipts. That one has already hit $36 million globally vs. a budget of $22 million, so it is on track to count as a success. Beyond that, there was not much in the way of genre entries in the Top 10, though Project Hail Mary held onto the Number 2 slot, adding another $20 million to its tally in North America. With $575 million in global receipts, that one remains on track to turn a profit. The Japanese horror film Exit 8 slipped to Number 12 in its second week in limited release, but it has already proven quite profitable in its home country. Avatar: Fire and Ash has ended its theatrical run, but with a global tally of nearly $1.5 billion vs. a budget of $400 million, it should be well into the black, Hollywood accounting notwithstanding. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 based on the weekend results.

Streaming Results

Netflix’s original sci fi film War Machine remained in that streamer’s Top 10 for a seventh week, and it has been in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for three weeks so far (those numbers are on about a one-month delay). This one definitely counts as a hit, and there are plans for a sequel, but it has not officially received the greenlight yet. Also continuing its long run in the charts is KPop Demon Hunters which has been in the Netflix Top 10 for an amazing 44 weeks and in the Nielsen Rankings for 32 weeks. A sequel for that one is currently on the way. Following are all the genre films from the Netflix Top 10 and the Nielsen Streaming Rankings:
