Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.
Box Office Results
Two genre entries premiered in theaters this past weekend, with one performing quite well and the other starting out as a huge Box Office disappointment, even though they had similar rankings in the chart. The low-budget horror film Hokum landed at Number 5, pulling in $6.4 million in domestic receipts. That one has a budget of only $5 million, so it is off to a good start and should be another of the niche horror entries to prove that the entertainment industry can turn a profit without spending massive amounts on production. As for the other film, Andy Serkis’ animated Animal Farm kicked off the Summer 2025 Blockbuster Season and proved to be a big dull dud at the Box Office. That one made it to Number 6 with only $3.3 million in receipts across North America, coming up way short of expectations. It has not had its global release yet, but on a budget of $35 million, the early returns suggest this one will count as the first flop of the Summer season. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 based on the weekend results.

Streaming Results
28 Days Later: The Bone Temple had its premiere on Netflix the week of March 30th, and it only ranked at Number 5 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, pulling in an estimated 296 million minutes of viewing. That one has not made it into the Netflix Top 10 for its run on that service, and its streaming viewership is definitely on the low side. The film also underperformed in theaters, and the planned third entry in the 28 Year Later trilogy is now in doubt. The sci fi thriller Mercy remained in the Nielsen charts for a second week, improving to Number 4, though viewership dropped to an estimated 297 million minutes. That one was a flop at the Box Office, though it has received some attention in streaming. Following are all the genre films from the Nielsen Streaming Rankings and the Netflix Top 10:
