But Now: Kindle | Paperback | Hardback
Earth’s future. His family’s survival.
Seattle naval architect Kai Carson has spent his life believing someone is out there. When an alien stranger called Oron contacts him, he discovers that humanity is already entangled in a conflict it knows nothing about. Earth commands access to mineral fields essential to faster-than-light travel, and rival civilizations are competing to determine its future. Oron’s alliance wants Kai to help humanity take part in that struggle, rather than leave its fate entirely to others.
His recruitment is no accident. In Vienna in 1815, alien observers intervened in the life of one of his ancestors, a diplomat negotiating peace. Two centuries later, that man’s experiences are surfacing as Kai’s own memories. The answers Oron offers draw him further into a history that has shaped his family without their knowledge.
The immediate threat comes from the Skarn, beings capable of killing humans and assuming their identities. A vessel disguised as an asteroid is approaching Earth carrying a biological weapon designed to destroy humanity while leaving the rest of the planet intact. Investigating its course, Kai exposes the researcher Emily Carter as a Skarn infiltrator sabotaging the observatory’s data. She escapes, leaving him with evidence that the enemy is already inside Earth’s defenses.
Kai joins an international effort to build a kilometre-scale beam installation capable of diverting the vessel. He finds an uneasy ally in Kyrion, a rogue Arcanian operative who broke with Oron’s alliance after being forbidden to prevent human atrocities. Kyrion helps him uncover sabotage within the project and challenges his faith in the alliance’s principles. When the strain causes Kai’s damaged cardiovascular system to fail, his survival depends on alien intervention. Kyrion’s defiance helps keep him alive, but also leaves him dependent on an ally whose methods he does not fully understand.
Humanity’s defenses fail, and the alliance refuses to intervene. An imperial warship destroys the incoming vessel. Its commander demands the dissolution of the United Nations and the surrender of Earth’s defense systems. Furious at the alliance for abandoning humanity, Kai nevertheless agrees to become their emissary, hoping to offer humanity an alternative to imperial rule. The alliance brings technology that could end energy scarcity; the Empire offers protection backed by overwhelming force. Governments divide into rival blocs.
The ruthless Skarn infiltrator abducts Kai’s son, Atlas, and demands that Kai betray the alliance he represents. As Kai tries to earn humanity’s trust, the enemy uses his family to dictate his actions. Kyrion helps him search for Atlas, even as the secrets surrounding Kyrion’s earlier intervention deepen Kai’s doubts about whom he can trust.
An imperial armada gives Earth forty-eight hours to choose its allegiance. With Atlas captive aboard an enemy warship, any attempt to save him risks escalating the confrontation over humanity’s future. Yet the powers fighting for Earth have failed to understand the planet itself. As the crisis deepens, Kai’s connection to it begins to exceed anything his alien allies can explain.
