Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.
Box Office Results
This past weekend brought a high-profile genre film to the theaters with the Steven Spielberg-directed Disclosure Day, but it did not fill as many seats as might have been expected. The alien-encounter movie did top the Box Office chart and bring in $44.5 million in domestic receipts, but with a budget of $115 million, it has a ways to go to close the gap. It did do well internationally with another $49.5 million in ticket sales, but it may struggle to turn a profit during its theatrical run. Also opening this weekend was the comedy with sci fi elements Stop! That! Train!, and that one only made it to the Number 10 slot with $2 million in domestic receipts. It was made on a more economical budget of $20 million and is likely targeting streaming and home video to turn a profit.
Indie films Backrooms and Obsession continued to perform well, with the latter improving to Number 2 and bringing in another $19 million domestically, while the former added another $11.5 million to its North American tally. Masters of the Universe took a notable drop to Number 5 in its second week and appears to on target for flop status with a global tally of $86 million so far vs. a budget of $200 million. Dropping out of the Top 20 was Project Hail Mary (on track to make money after thirteen weeks) and Mortal Kombat II (headed towards flop status after six weeks). New indie entry O Horizon made $2K in one theater for its premiere week, and it will be looking to get more attention in home video and streaming. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 (and a few just outside) based on the weekend results.
