Sci Fi Movies This Week: Weekly column tracking what is coming in the current week in the way of sci fi, fantasy, and horror releases as well as news and updates on genre films, streaming and theatrical.
Sci Fi Movie Premieres This Week:
After getting quite a number of sci fi and fantasy releases last weekend, the upcoming weekend is rather light on genre entries. The indie films Leviticus and Rose of Nevada will be arriving in theaters on Friday, both in limited engagements. On streaming, Box Office success Project Hail Mary has its premiere today on MGM+, and the horror film The Voices of Our Mothers hits Shudder on Friday. The Summer Blockbuster season resumes next week with the arrival of Supergirl, and you can read more about that one and all the current and upcoming sci fi and fantasy movies at this link.
Leviticus (In Theaters-Limited, June 19th): Two star-crossed teenage boys must escape a violent entity that takes the form of the person they desire most — each other.
Directed by: Adrian Chiarella
Starring: Joe Bird, Stacy Clausen, Jeremy Blewitt, Ewen Leslie, Davida McKenzie
Rose of Nevada (In Theaters-Limited, June 19th): Three decades ago, the Rose of Nevada vanished at sea, along with its crew. Now, it has returned. In a remote fishing village, its reappearance is embraced as an auspicious sign, with the local citizens convinced the luck of their economically devastated community may turn, if only the ship sails again.
Directed by: Mark Jenkin
Starring: Callum Turner, George MacKay, Francis Magee, Denzil Monk, Rosalind Eleazar, Edward Rowe
Sci Fi Movie News of Note:

George Miller is not done with the Mad Max franchise as he wants to make one more film in the series. He is looking at that as the climax for the movies, but he also has plans beyond the film. He wants to expand on the universe, and he is also considering a television series that could explore more of his post-apocalyptic world. He presented both to Warner Bros. and they passed (likely because they are going through the merger with Paramount), but this is being shopped around to other studios. This is a developing story, so stay tuned for further updates.
Evil Dead Burn hits theaters on July 10th, and there is another movie from the franchise currently in the works as well. Evil Dead Wrath was previously announced and it has wrapped production, but not much is known about the movie. In a recent interview, executive producer Rob Tapert has revealed a few more details:
Evil Dead Wrath is yet another great departure. It predates everything. It takes place in 1972. It will feel like a 1972 movie because the director and his DP want to imitate the film’s look and feel of something that’s called Ektachrome 100, which was a film stock. Still available. A lot of movies shot on back then. And so it’s very warm, very tungsten.
That film is currently scheduled for an April 2028 premiere.
The animated fantasy film KPop Demon Hunters has continued its long run in the charts and it has become the first Netflix original to track 52 weeks in that streamer’s Top 10. Word is that a sequel film and other spin-offs are in the works.
In scheduling news, the sci fi action thriller Hot Spot has made it onto this Summer’s schedule, arriving in theaters August 21st. You can see the trailer for that one below.
