Sci Fi Box Office: Indie Genre Films Continue to Perform Well in Theaters, Nope Enters the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, and More

Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.

Box Office Results

This Summer has not been particularly good for Blockbusters so far (you can see the results from the latest Scorecard), but indie sci fi and fantasy films have been performing quite well in theaters. The sci fi/horror entry Backrooms has held in the Top 4 for a fourth week in a row, and that one has pulled in $277 million globally vs. a $5 million budget. Horror film Obsession has spent six weeks in the Top 4, and it has a global tally of $334 million vs. a budget of less than $1 million. New entry Leviticus made it to the Number 9 slot last weekend in limited release, and it currently has $3.3 million in global ticket sales vs. a budget of of $3 million.  Premiering in very limited release, Rose of Nevada saw impressive sales of $7,575 per theater and that one will likely head to VOD soon.

Meanwhile, the big-dollar films from this Summer continue to underperform with Steven Speilberg’s Disclosure Day as the latest entry to deliver disappointing Box Office Results. That one slipped to Number 2 in its second week with a notable drop off in attendance (60%), and it is currently on target to lose money with $163 million globally vs. a budget of $115 million (a film usually needs to make double its budget based on domestic ticket sales or three times that amount globally to break even). Masters of the Universe is headed towards flop status, dropping to Number 6 in its third week with a global tally of $103 million vs. a hefty $200 million budget. And The Mandalorian and Grogu looks like it will come up short in its theatrical run, slipping to Number 7 in its fifth week with a global tally of $322 million vs. a budget of $165 million. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 (and a one just outside) based on the weekend results.
