Sci Fi TV News: Genndy Tartakovsky Takes on Conan the Barbarian, Absolute Batman Heads to Television, and More

Sci Fi TV News: Weekly digest of the recent news and updates relating to sci fi and fantasy television.

Sci Fi TV News of Note:

Announced at the Annecy Animation Festival, a Conan the Barbarian animated series is in the works from Warner Bros. Animation with Genndy Tartakovsky helming the project. The Samurai Jack creator had the following comments about the series:

I’ve been trying to develop Conan’ since 2008, but the world was not ready. But now, after Adult Swim’s Samurai Jack and Primal, it’s prime time for this to come to life. I have been so inspired by the books written by Robert E. Howard, whose work I have a personal connection with. So far I feel super excited. This is the only IP I’ve worked on other than Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and I think it’s going to be something special.

This is being done in conjunction with Cartoon Network Studios, so it will likely air on Adult Swim. Expect this to arrive at some point in 2027.

More animation announcements came this week as DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation are currently working on Absolute Batman, based on the comic of the same name, and Joker: Laugh Riot. Deadline gives the following description for the properties:

Reinventing the Batman myth for a new generation of fans, Absolute Batman reimagines the Dark Knight as a working-class hero up against impossible odds on a mission to prove that even in an era of wealth, power and corruption, one good person can change the world.

Joker: Laugh Riot: When Batman is murdered, the Joker launches a ruthless crusade through Gotham’s underworld to find the killer who took away his greatest adversary. But as his violent quest for answers pushes him closer towards vigilante than villain, Joker is forced to confront the truth that without Batman, he doesn’t know who he is.

Scott Snyder, who created the Absolute: Batman comic, will be onboard as executive producer and showrunner, and that one will be brought to life with CGI animation. Yasuhuro Aoki will be directing Joker: Laugh Riot and it will be done anime-style. The assumption is that these will be on HBO Max, though they could get shopped to other venues. Other animation projects currently in the works include Krypto, Mister Miracle, DC Superpowers, and Starfire as well as future seasons of Creature Commandos, Batman: Caped Crusader, and My Adventures with Superman.

In casting and renewal news, The Boys star Jack Quaid will be jumping onboard Amazon’s other superhero series Invincible starting with its fifth season, and he will be voicing the character Gravitator/Chris. In addition, that show has received and early Season 6 renewal as announced at Annecy Animation Festival. More on that at this link.
