Sci Fi TV Highlights: Weekly post looking at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note. The dates and times shown below can change with little to no notice.
Schedule Notes:
Two shows are wrapping up this week, starting with The Librarians: The Next Chapter which will have its Season 2 finale on Monday. There has been no word on a third year for that one yet. Then on Sunday, The Walking Dead: Dead City airs its Season 3 finale with no word yet on whether it will continue to a fourth year. Next week the premieres pick up again with four genre entries hitting the schedule along with two original movies (you can see a rundown of all the premieres from the month at this link). Sci Fi TV News of Note:
The Dungeons & Dragons based TV series Ravenloft is currently in the works at Netflix based on the gothic horror setting created for that role-playing game. Deadline gives the following description of the property:
Described as a prestige fantasy series where adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance, Ravenloft and its Domains of Dread tackle adventure through character-driven stories of dark magic and supernatural intrigue. At its heart, the series follows the making of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, whose story of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation charts his origins from tragic antihero to one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most notorious villains.
Frequent Tim Burton collaborator John August (Frankenweenie, Big Fish) will be onboard as writer and executive producer. This is in the early stages of development, so it is looking at a late 2027 premiere at best, but more likely 2028 or later.
The animated series Ghostbusters: Night Shift is currently in the works at Netflix, and co-showrunner Elliott Kalan had the following to say about how they are approaching it:
It was about trying to capture the tone of the original movies and newer movies so it feels like our characters could walk off the television, onto a movie screen and interact with the pre-existing characters if they wanted to. The Ghosbusters movies are miracles. They have a very specific tone and they care about the characters, who are so charismatic to be around. We wanted to try to capture that tone in all aspects.
One of the original Ghostbusters, Dan Akroyd, will be onboard as executive producer, and it looks like the series will be counting as canon. Work is already underway for the show and it could be looking at a 2027 premiere.
Amazon has decided to cancel its superhero series Spider-Noir despite that fact that the show drew strong viewership and good buzz in its first season. This one came as part of a partnership between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony focusing on the latter company’s IP for Spider-Man related characters, and there are plans to develop other properties from that collaboration.
