Sci Fi Movies This Week: Premiere for Hope, a Sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Is in the Works, and More

Sci Fi Movies This Week: Weekly column tracking what is coming in the current week in the way of sci fi, fantasy, and horror releases as well as news and updates on genre films, streaming and theatrical.

Sci Fi Movie Premieres This Week:

This is a rather slow week for sci fi and fantasy films, with only two genre entries hitting theaters. The South Korean sci fi movie Hope will be getting limited exposure across North America starting on Friday. And the supernatural sequel Practical Magic 2 will be getting a wide release on the same day. Coming to streaming today on HBO Max is this past Summer’s Supergirl which is hoping to soar higher in digital viewing than it did in theaters. And available On Demand is the sci fi indie Hot Spot. You can see highlights for this week below, and you can see the schedule of all the current and upcoming sci fi and fantasy movies at this link.

Hope (In Theaters-Limited, September 11th): In the remote village of Hope Harbor, near the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the community is thrown into chaos when a tiger is suspected to have appeared and local police chief Bum-seok is alerted. But what begins as a local emergency soon spirals into a deeper, more terrifying mystery, one that forces the town’s residents to confront the unknown.

Directed by: Na Hong-jin

Starring: Taylor Russell, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Cameron Britton, Jung Ho-yeon, Zo In-sung, Hwang Jung-min

Practical Magic (In Theaters, September 11th): Set 25 years after the events of the first movie, the story follows the Owens family as they face a new crisis when a discovery regarding the family’s history & the origins of their magic comes to light. When Sally’s daughter (Joey King) begins to uncover hidden family secrets & develops her own dark abilities, they are plunged into a multi-generational struggle to finally break the curse that has haunted their lineage for centuries. The Owens women (Sally, Gillian, and their aunts) must once again unite, traveling from their home in Massachusetts to the UK to confront the source of their magic and save the next generation of their family.

Sci Fi Movie News of Note:

A sequel to Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves is in the works

Paramount passed on a sequel to 2023’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves after that one did not prove to be a hit in theaters, but directors directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have already completed a script for a second movie, and they have hopes that it will still happen. They claim that Hasbro–which owns the rights to the property–is looking for other studios to produce the film, and this one should draw some interest as it has shown staying power in streaming and home video. This is a developing story, so stay tuned for updates.

Genre icon Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.) announced recently that he only has about five years to live after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. But he commented that “I’m gonna live my life as close to what is normal as I can for as long as I can”, and he is touring with his recent non-genre film Ernie & Emma, so it is possible we will get to see him in another movie or two before losing him.

The upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter–directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling–will be getting released in Imax 70mm as will the original 1977 film in that series. Starfighter will hit theaters May 28, 2027–the 50th anniversary of the release of Star Wars–and the original film will get its Imax release on February 19th. There is no word at this point on which version it will be of that film, though, likely one of George Lucas’ later edited cuts.

This past Summer’s Steven Spielberg film Disclosure Day has received a streaming release date, arriving on Peacock on October 9th. That one is currently available VOD and on Home Video.
