Axiom’s Edge Renegade Sci Fi Magazine

We are currently moving forward with plans for the Axiom’s Edge Renegade Sci Fi and Fantasy Magazine, and we are welcoming writers to submit their stories. You can read the PDF version of the prototype issue at this link. We will not be continuing with the comics included in that issue, only prose fiction and articles, but we may revisit that at some point in the future.

What We Are Looking For:

We are inviting authors to submit short stories in the science fiction and fantasy genres. We might consider some horror stories, but they have to have strong sci fi and/or fantasy elements, something along the lines of cosmic horror. Typically, we are looking for stories that range from 2,000 to 5,000 words, though we will consider stories up to 10,000 words as well as micro or short-short stories under 2,000 words. If you are submitting a work that is close to 10,000 words, send a 2,000-word excerpt that is representative of the piece as well as a full description, and we will let you know if we want to read more. Otherwise, submit the full manuscript.

Please send it in a Microsoft Word-compatible format to axiomsedgescifi@gmail.com with the word “Submission” included in the subject line. Google Docs is also okay, and you can submit a link to a shared document.

As for the type of stories we are looking for, these should be pieces with general appeal to sci fi and fantasy fans that are well-written with a focus on story and characters. We are not necessarily looking for overly intellectual stories, though those will be considered if we deem them engaging to the reader. Think of The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, and Black Mirror episodes as examples of the types of stories we are looking for. Also think of the old EC Comics as well as the better-written pulp stories. A sense of fun and adventure is definitely encouraged, and be sure to tell a complete story. We are not considering serialized tales for the first issue, but we may accept those in the future.

What We Are Paying:

For the first issue, we are paying 2 cents per word plus an additional share of the profit if the magazine sells well. If sales go above 1,000 copies (our estimated break-even point), then authors will get a percentage of the profit based on the number of words they contributed to the magazine. We haven’t nailed down the exact numbers yet, but for a 5,000-word story, the estimate would be around 10 cents per copy sold above 1,000, with a minimum payout of $10. So if the first issue sells 500 copies beyond the initial 1,000, a 5,000-word story would earn the author an additional $50.

The magazine will be available in paperback and Kindle formats on Amazon.com, and we will also be looking to get it into independent stores and possibly even larger chains.

Note that if we do pay for a story, that will include the rights to publish it in the magazine and possibly on the website as well (behind a paywall). It will also include the option for one reprint in a “Best of” collection (for which the author will receive compensation). One year after publication, all rights will revert to the author.

Authors Will Get the Chance to Promote Their Works:

If your submission is accepted and you have other sci fi and fantasy works published, we will mention those in the author profile included with your story. We will also accept one or two excerpts from existing books to be published in the first issue of the magazine. This should be a representative excerpt from your work that will entice the reader to seek it out, and we will provide information on where they can find it. The author will not get paid for this, but it does provide free advertising for their work. Another option is an original story set in the same universe that ties into an existing work. This will be paid at the rate listed above.

We Are Accepting Advertisements:

We are also looking for advertisements for the first issue, and we are welcoming indie sci fi creators to promote their works. The cost is $50 for a half-page ad, and we will have up to five pages of ads in the first issue. See a sample of a half-page ad below, and note that the magazine will be in black and white, so any artwork submitted must look good in that format. Advertising will also include some plugs on the AxiomsEdgeSciFi.com and CancelledSciFi.com sites.

Other individuals and/or companies with genre-related projects interested in advertising in the magazine (and on our sites) can contact us at axiomsedgescifi@gmail.com
