Sci Fi TV News: Weekly digest of the recent news and updates relating to sci fi and fantasy television.
Apple TV has acquired the rights to Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere books with plans to do movies and at least one television series. The Mistborn series will be the focus of feature films and The Stormlight Archive series will be adapted as an ongoing series. Following is the description of the properties provided by The Hollywood Reporter:
The first Mistborn trilogy of books centered on metal-using magicians who attempt to overthrow a despotic empire. Stormlight Archives’ first novel, The Way of Kings, is set in a world with magically powered storms, magically powered knights and monsters known as the Voidbringers.
Apple TV picked these up in a very competitive situation, and Sanderson will be given a fair amount of control over the productions. Expect production on the movies and series to begin soon.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has performed well for HBO so far, and according to Deadline, more Game of Thrones spin-offs and sequels are in the works:
Including a Jon Snow and Arya Stark sequel written by Quoc Dang Tran; an animated Sea Snake project Nine Voyages, with Genndy Tartakovsky said to be attached, as well as 10,000 Ships written by Eboni Booth and Aegon’s Conquest penned by Mattson Tomlin.
None of these has received an official greenlight at this point, and not many specifics are available, but the premium cable channel is definitely planning more from the franchise.
In production news, work has begun on Season 3 of Hulu’s Paradise and on the BBC series Ministry of Time, and you can read more about those in our latest Sci Fi TV Production Report post. Also, the new Stargate series in the works at Amazon has set London as its homebase for filming, and production is expected to ramp up in Fall 2026. Filming on Severance Season 3 will not start until Summer which will push that show to a 2027 return at best.
In casting news, Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride) has been set to play Odin in Amazon’s upcoming God of War series which is in the works from Ronald D. Moore. He will be joining Ryan Hurst who has the lead role as Kratos as well as Teresa Palmer (Phoebe/Sif), Max Parker (Heimdall), and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Thor). Gabriel Basso (Super 8, Night Agent) is in talks to come onboard the live-action Mobile Suit Gundam series in the works at Netflix, joining Sydney Sweeny who will be in the lead role.
Several premiere dates were announced this week including the second season of Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again which will arrive on March 24th (it was previously set for March 4). The teaser for that one is below. Amazon announced the Season 4 premiere for its animated superhero series Invincible which will have its bow on March 18th. And Apple TV announced two genre premieres with For All Mankind Season 5 arriving on March 27th and Season 2 of Sugar set for July 19th.
