Sci Fi Movies This Week: Weekly column racking what is coming in the current week in the way of sci fi, fantasy, and horror releases as well as news on genre films.
Premiering This Week:
This week brings only one new major genre release to the theaters, and that is the second movie in the 28 Years Later trilogy subtitled The Bone Temple. The third film in that series is currently in the works and likely hitting theaters next year. Returning to the theaters for its 25th anniversary is The Lord of the Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson. The Fellowship of the Ring will be on the big screen in limited engagement on Friday followed by The Two Towers on Saturday and The Return of the King on Sunday. Also available in theaters on a limited engagement is the Anime film All You Need Is Kill as well as the horror entry Night Patrol, both of which arrive on Friday. Coming to streaming this week is The Running Man which will be available on Paramount+. Available On Demand on Friday are The Confession and Strange Dark. You can see all the premieres for January and beyond at our Sci Fi Movie Schedule page. (Primary Source: MovieInsider.com)
28 Days Later: The Bone Temple (In Theaters, Jan 16): In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship – with consequences that could change the world as they know it – and Spike’s (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) becomes a nightmare he can’t escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival – the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and much more terrifying.

Sci Fi Movie News

Tim Burton’s remake of The Attack of the 50 Foot Woman was announced back in 2024, and production on that is moving forward (with a new entry showing up in this week’s Production Weekly list). KPop Demon Hunters screenwriters Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan are coming onboard to pen the script for the film about a wealthy heiress who grows into a giant after an alien encounter and exacts revenge on her cheating husband. Burton will be directing, but no casting announcements have been made at this point.
Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero–the sequel to Godzilla Minus One–has received a release date in Japan and North America. It will hit theaters in the former country on November 3rd this year and will arrive in the States three days later on November 6th. Film historians may remember November 3rd as the date that the original Godzilla (known in Japan as Gojira) was released in its home country in 1954. A trailer has not been released for that yet, just a title reveal teaser which you can see at this link.
The Blade reboot at Marvel appears to be dead as word is that the film is no longer moving forward at this point. Mahershala Ali has long been linked the role (he did an uncredited voice-only cameo as Blade in a post credits scene in The Eternals), but it appears that a solo film with the character will not be happening anytime soon. There is still a chance that vampire hunter could appear in another MCU movie–perhaps the long-rumored Midnight Sons–but nothing is confirmed at this point and Ali may no longer be involved if that moves forward.
Box Office Results

Avatar: Fire and Ash continued to dominate at the Box Office, holding onto the Number 1 slot for a fourth week in a row and moving past $1.2 billion in receipts globally. The horror entry Primate got off to a good start at the Number 2 slot, pulling in over $11 million in domestic theaters, and that has it on track to more than recoup its $25 million budget. The first week for Greenland 2: The Migration was not as promising, making it to only the Number 5 slot with $8.4 million in receipts. That one will likely have to do well in streaming and home video to surpass its $90 million budget. Also hitting the big screen last weekend was the sci fi indie OBEX which pulled in nearly $10K in the one theater it was released. That one should be coming to VOD shortly.
