Sci Fi Movie News

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has been pulled from theaters after experiencing a notable drop in ticket sales in its third week (you can see the Box Office results at this link). It is unclear if it is getting yanked from all theaters, or if it will just have less of presence there in the coming weeks. A third film was planned to cap off the 28 Years Later trilogy, but that may be in doubt now seeing as The Bone Temple stands to lose money.

Ian McKellen will be taking up the wizard staff and donning the robes again to return as Gandalf for the upcoming Lord of the Rings film The Hunt for Gollum. Andy Serkis will be directing that and reprising his role as Gollum, and there is word that Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen could be making appearances as well. Filming is set to begin in July which would have it on track for a 2027 premiere.

We previously covered the news that Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe is getting an adaptation at Apple TV, and that he will be closely involved with that. Sanderson himself has now revealed that he will be writing the script for the Mistborn film:

I will be writing the Mistborn screenplay myself over the next 5 months, as my full time work. Goal is for a theatrical Mistborn, then Stormlight show after. Focus on doing it carefully and right.

He also explained why he went with Apple TV after a bidding war for the property:

The decision to pick Apple was due to two factors. First, the level of approvals and control. Apple wants to be a true partner with me, and they feel like they really get what I want to do. Second, their track record. Apple does fewer things, but with higher quality, than some other studios. I find virtually every thing of theirs I watch is excellent and creator driven.

This adaptation will take a while to get going, but it’s possible the film could premiere at some point in 2027.

In casting news, Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) will be joining Mike Flanagan’s reboot of The Exorcist. Already set for that film are Scarlet Johansson (Black Widow), Jacobi Jupe (Britannia), Diane Lane (Y: The Last Man), and Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Man Who Fell to Earth). In addition, Isabela Merced (Superman) has been pegged as the lead for the movie adaptation of the hit Sega videogame franchise The House Of The Dead.
