Critics’ Consensus: Millie Alcock brings a swagger to Kara Zor-El that’d make Krypton proud in this otherwise familiar origin story, dawning a promising new hero in the DCU who’s still waiting for an adventure that matches her vigor.
Audience Says: An enjoyable origin story for Kara Zor-El that leans into the messy emotional fallout of grief, Supergirl launches DC into a new era with cosmic force.
Was It a Success? In a Summer dominated by genre disappointments at the Box Office, Supergirl currently has a chance to be a leader among the flops. The film only managed to pull in $37 million domestically in its opening weekend, coming in under previous superhero turkeys such as Morbius ($39 million opening weekend) and The Marvels ($46 million). It has not performed much better globally, and with a budget of around $180 million plus a 70% drop in ticket sales in its second week, this one will almost certainly fall well short in its theatrical run. At this point, it is a toss-up on whether Supergirl or Masters of the Universe will take the trophy as the biggest loser of the season (the latter had an opening weekend of $30 million vs. a budget of $170 million), with the edge currently going to He-Man. So now it will be up to Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31st premiere) to save superheroes at the Box Office.
Should You See It in Theaters? Critics have not been too kind to Supergirl so far, but the audience has been more receptive to the film. As a big-budget superhero entry, you can expect that it will take advantage of the spectacle and deliver entertainment designed for the big screen. But with a poor opening and a big drop in its second weekend, Warner Bros. may be looking at a quick exit from the theaters in hopes that the film can find a bigger audience in home video and streaming. Unless you are a huge DC fan, and/or you particularly like Supergirl, you may want to save the money on today’s hefty ticket prices and wait until you can enjoy this one at home.
