Sci Fi Box Office: Supergirl Crashes in Theaters, The Creator Enters the Netflix Top 10, and More

Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.

Box Office Results

Yet another Summer 2026 Blockbuster has fallen short at the Box Office as the latest superhero film showed a diminshed power to draw people into the theaters. Supergirl arrived on Friday, the second entry in the attempt by James Gunn and Peter Safran to reboot the DC Universe, and it missed the top of the chart (reaching the Number 2 slot) as it pulled in only $37 million in ticket sales over the weekend across North America. That was below other superhero flops Morbius ($39 million opening weekend) and The Marvels ($46 million), and the film’s prospects are not good at this point. It did pull in another $28 million overseas, but with a budget of $180 million, this one appears to be on track for flop status. That has all of the Blockbusters from this Summer counting either as flops or headed towards losing money, and it will be up to The Odyssey (July 17th premiere) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31st premiere) to salvage the season.

Meanwhile, the indie films continue to do well with Obsession holding at the Number 3 slot and adding another $9.7 million to its tally, Backrooms at Number 6 with $4.3 million in domestic ticket sales over the weekend, and Leviticus at Number 11 and close to turning a profit on its $3.5 million budget. Last week’s Rose of Nevada expanded to a few more theaters after a successful premiere weekend and improved to Number 28 in the charts, and it will be heading to VOD soon. BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity landed at the Number 8 slot in limited release, pulling in $3 million is domestic receipts. Dropping out of the Top 20 was sci fi comedy Stop! That! Train!, and that one will be looking to find more success on home video. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 (and a one just outside) based on the weekend results.
