Sci Fi Box Office: Project Hail Mary Has a Strong Start, War Machine Remains in the Netflix Top 5, and More

Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.

Box Office Results

This past weekend’s big release, Project Hail Mary, brought quite a lot of people into the theaters, delivering a strong debut weekend with $80.5 million in domestic receipts. It added another $60.4 million internationally for a good tally out of the gate, though it may still struggle to turn a profit against a hefty $200 million budget. Scream 7 slipped to Number 6 in its fourth week in cinemas, but with a global tally of $194 vs. a $45 million budget, it has proven quite profitable thus far. Horror entry Undertone slipped to Number 8, but it added another $3 million to its total, and it is sitting pretty at $15 million vs. a budget of only $500K. The Bride! continued to slip (to Number 11), and with a $23 million global tally vs. an $80 million budget, it will have to hope for a second wind when it hits home video and streaming to turn a profit. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 based on the weekend results.

Streaming Results

Netflix’s original sci fi film War Machine slipped to Number 2 in that streamer’s Top 10 in its third week, but continues to draw large viewership, adding another 32.7 million hours of viewing to its tally across 18 million households. A sequel for that has not been officially announced yet, but it is in the works. In the Nielsen chart, Predator: Badlands held at Number 3 for its second week of streaming on Hulu, pulling in an estimated 343 million minutes of viewing. That movie just broke even at the Box Office, but its streaming run should help to get it into the black. Following are all the genre films from the Netflix Top 10 and the Nielsen Streaming Rankings.
