Sci Fi Box Office: Backrooms and Obsession Top the Charts, Mandalorian and Grogu Takes a Big Drop in Its Second Week, and More

Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.

Box Office Results

Blockbusters did not top the charts this past weekend as the more modestly budgeted films Backrooms and Obsession took the Number 1 and 2 slots at the Box Office. Sci fi/horror entry Backrooms had an impressive debut, pulling in $81 million in domestic receipts while competing against big names in the theaters like The Mandalorian and Grogu and The Devil Wears Prada 2. With a budget of only $10 million and a global tally of over $125 million, it already counts as a runaway hit. The micro-budget supernatural drama Obsession continued to perform well, adding another $27 million to it domestic tally in its second week which totals nearly $106 million so far. With production costs of less than one million dollars, that one has also proven quite successful. The modestly budgeted horror film Passenger (not to be confused with the upcoming thriller The Passenger, which I did) slipped to Number 9 in its second weekend. But that one has pulled in $25 million globally vs. a budget of $15 million and should be on track to turn a profit in its theatrical run. The horror entry Hokum slipped to Number 17 in its fifth week, but with $23.6 million worldwide vs. a $5 million budget, it is yet another modestly-priced film that has proven quite profitable.

Meanwhile, big-budget entry The Mandalorian and Grogu took a notable drop in its second week as domestic receipts slipped by 70%. It slid to the Number 3 slot at the Box Office with a $24.5 million tally across North America. But it still looks unlikely that the film will count as a flop because it continues to perform well internationally. It has pulled in nearly $250 million worldwide vs. a a budget of $165 million, so it could at least break even during its theatrical run. Then once it hits home video and streaming, that will just add to the bottom line. As for this Summer season’s first flop–Animal Farm–it has disappeared from the theaters and should be hitting streaming soon. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 based on the weekend results.
