Ice Cream Man Box Office Results

Sci Fi Box Office: Ice Cream Man Has a Chilling Start, The Last House Tops the Netflix Chart, and More

Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.

Box Office Results

The horror entry Ice Cream Man got off to somewhat of a cool start, premiering at the Number 8 slot and only pulling in two million dollars in receipts across North America. That one was likely hurt by poor reception from critics and audiences, currently holding a 28% Tomatometer Score (based on critics’ reviews) and a 49% Popcornmeter Score (based on audience response) on Rotten Tomatoes. But horror films do tend to pull in steady receipts despite the reviews and this was made on a budget of only $5.5 million, so it could still turn a profit in its theatrical run.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day dropped 60% from its opening weekend, but it still pulled in $144 million in domestic ticket sales and it is currently at nearly $1.7 billion across the globe. The Odyssey also joined the billion-dollar-club, passing that threshold over the weekend as I previously predicted, currently at $1.1 billion worldwide. Dropping out of the Top 20 was the horror entry Backrooms which slipped to the Number 21 slot, but it has proven a success with a global tally of $395 million vs. a budget of less than $10 million. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 (and a few just outside) based on the weekend results.

Streaming Results

The Netflix original film The Last House topped that streamer’s chart for movies with its premiere last week, pulling in 51.4 million hours viewed across 27.5 accounts over three days (it was released on Friday). Those are good numbers for a single movie and may have it on track for a sequel. Also appearing in that chart, Spider-Man: No Way Home (Number 3) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (Number 4) drew high viewership, driven by the success of Brand New Day in theaters. In the Nielsen chart, Project Hail Mary held at the Number 1 slot for a second week, improving to and estimated 922 million minutes viewed. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy peeked in at the Number 9 slot with 217 million minutes watched the week after its streaming premiere. Following are all the genre films from the Netflix Top 10 and the Nielsen Streaming Rankings:
