Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.
Box Office Results
The latest entry in the the Insidious horror franchise–Out of the Further–had a good start at the Box Office, hitting the Number 2 slot (behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day), and pulling in $25 million in domestic receipts. With a global tally of $62 million so far vs. a budget of $18 million, this one already counts as a hit after its first weekend. Not performing as well was the fantasy entry The Magic Faraway Tree, which only made it to the Number 11 spot with $1.3 million in domestic receipts. That one was released in the United Kingdom earlier this year and it has pulled in $34 million globally, but that is well short of its $80 million budget.
Sci fi indie film Hot Spot just barely made it into the Top 20, at the Number 19 slot, with a domestic tally of $200K across 268 theaters. The horror entry It Ends played in only five cinemas, but it had an impressive opening, averaging $12,257 per theater. That one may be getting a wider release next weekend. The End of Oak Street dropped to Number 5 in its second week, and with a global tally of $86 million so far vs. a budget of $90 million, it is certainly on track to lose money (a film typically must make double its budget in domestic receipts or two-and-half to three times worldwide to reach the break even point). Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 (and a few just outside) based on the weekend results.

Streaming Results

Masters of the Universe made a quick jump to streaming after flopping at the Box Office, and it hit Number 1 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its premiere on Amazon’s Prime Video, pulling in an estimated 1.2 billion minutes of viewing. That is a good start for its streaming run, but it may not make up for falling short in the theaters. Another Summer Box Office flop–Mortal Kombat II–also hit that chart for its streaming premiere, but just barely at the Number 10 slot. That one pulled in only 246 million minutes of viewing for the start of its run on HBO Max, and it looks like the franchise could be stalling with this sequel. Over on Netflix, The Last House slipped to Number 2 in its third week, pulling in 22.4 million hours watched across 12 million accounts. There is no word at this point on whether a sequel for that one is in the works. Following are all the genre films from the Nielsen Streaming Rankings and the Netflix Top 10:
