Critics’ Consensus: Tapping into the primal pleasures of the classic creature feature, The End of Oak Street is pulpy good fun carried off with a light touch and a sharp bite.

Was It a Success? August is generally when the big dollar films without much name recognition or with lower expectations hit the theaters, and those typically do not turn into big hits at the Box Office. The End of Oak Street is an original film written and directed by David Robert Mitchell (It Follows), and it is not based on any existing property, putting it in the first of those two categories. But it does have dinosaurs, and audiences typically love to see the giant lizards run amok on the big screen. Not to many this time around, though, because it had a rather tepid opening of $38 million domestically, and through its second week the global tally is only at $86 million.
Perhaps Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey are to blame, because people are flocking to the theaters to see those two after a slow start earlier in the Summer for genre films. Or perhaps The End of Oak Street just got lost in the mix amidst the Back-to-School shuffle and ridiculously high gas prices. It did not have a huge budget ($92 million), but it still will have trouble recouping that based on current ticket sales. It may be able to avoid the flop designation, but it certainly looks like this one will end up losing money during its theatrical run.
Should You See It in Theaters? If you like dinosaur films, it certainly seems like this creature feature will scratch that itch. The giant lizards definitely look more impressive on the big screen, and overall this one has been getting good marks from critics and audiences. I actually did want to go see this one in the theaters (as well as the new Spider-Man entry and The Odyssey), but recovery from my recent knee surgery has been slow, so I may miss out. But if you have the chance (and enough money left over after filling your tank), this one may be worth the current price they are charging for tickets.
