Sci Fi Box Office: Mortal Kombat II Punches Its Way into the Charts, Animal Farm Likely to Leave Theaters Soon, and More

Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.

Box Office Results

After the disappointing start for Animal Farm to kick off the Summer Blockbuster Season (more on that at this link), Mortal Kombat II was the next genre entry to step up and show what it could do, and it had somewhat better success. That one premiered at Number 2 in the Box Office chart (behind early juggernaut The Devil Wears Prada 2), and it pulled in $38.5 million in domestic receipts. At over $65 million globally so far vs. a budget of $80 million, it is looking like it should do well in its theatrical run. Project Hail Mary slipped to Number 7 in its eighth week, but with a global tally of $657 million vs. a budget of $200 million, it should be in the black, Hollywood accounting not withstanding. Animal Farm dropped to Number 10 in its second week and only pulled in $704K, so I expect to see that one leaving theaters soon and heading to streaming. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 based on the weekend results.
