Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.
Box Office Results
Project Hail Mary may have slipped to Number 2 at the Box Office over the extended Easter Weekend–behind animated family film The Super Mario Galaxy Movie–but it is still performing quite well in its third week. It added another $54 million in domestic receipts across the four-day holiday weekend, and it is at $425 million globally vs. a budget of $200 million. With several more weeks to go in its theatrical run, this one should certainly count as a hit. Action horror comedy They Will Kill You slipped to Number 6 in its second week, and that one has taken in $16 million globally vs. a $20 million budget. It will likely have to look to home video and streaming to turn a profit. Horror entry Undertone slipped to Number 10 in its fourth week, but it has already proven quite profitable with a global tally of $20 million vs. a budget of $500K. Avatar: Fire and Ash has gone into overtime in its theatrical run–currently in its 16th week–and it is approaching $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales. That is lower than the other two entries in the franchise, but should still have the film well into the black. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 based on the weekend results.

Streaming Results

Netflix’s original film War Machine entered the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its debut (those results run on about a one-month delay), topping the chart and pulling in an estimated 1.1 billion minutes of viewing. That one is in its fifth week in the Netflix Top 10, and as previously mentioned, a sequel for that film is currently under consideration. Apart from that, dinosaurs took over the Nielsen chart for the week with four Jurassic World films in the Top 10: Rebirth (No. 2), Dominion (No. 3), Jurassic World (No. 4), and Fallen Kingdom (No. 6). In the Netflix charts, Anaconda improved to Number 1 as that one is finding renewed life in streaming. It pulled in 16.4 million hours of viewing across 9.9 million households, and a sequel for that one could be possible even though it only broke even in its theatrical run. Following are all the genre films from the Nielsen Streaming Rankings and the Netflix Top 10:
