Sci Fi Box Office: Spider-Man Brand New Day Nets a Few Viewers in Theaters, Project Hail Mary Tops the Nielsen Chart, and More

Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.

Box Office Results

Can we officially declare that superhero-fatigue is over, or is Spider-Man immune to it? In any case, the new movie featuring the web crawler pulled in… shall we say… a few people to the theaters. It posted the largest opening weekend of all-time domestically with a $360 million tally in North America, besting Avengers: Endgame. And in just six days, it has passed $1 billion across the globe, falling just behind Endgame on that mark. So apparently audiences do still want to see superheroes if they hit the right notes.

And yet another hero had a successful journey at the Box Office this past weekend as The Odyssey tacked on another $51 million in domestic receipts during its third week despite stiff competition from the web head. That one is now over $920 million globally, officially counting it has a hit, and it could break the $1 billion threshold over the coming weekend. Of note among indie films this past weekend, the Japanese sci fi entry Sheep in the Box did get an extended release after its limited premiere as I predicted, and it peaked into the Top 20 at Number 19, bring it to $4.3 million worldwide. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 (and a few just outside) based on the weekend results.

Project Hail Mary topped the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its premiere on Prime Video and MGM+, pulling in an estimated 860 million minutes of viewing (you can read my review of that film at this link). Also on that chart, Independence Day hit the Number 6 slot, likely drawing attention prior to the July 4th holiday. And Spider-Man: Homecoming crawled to the Number 8 slot, likely in anticipation of the Brand New Day premiere. In the Netflix movie Top 10, KPop Demon Hunters climbed back up to Number 5 as that one continues its historic run on the streaming charts. War Machine was at Number 8, and a sequel to that one is officially moving forward. Following are all the genre films from the Netflix Top 10 and the Nielsen Streaming Rankings:
