Box Office Results
We have what looks like our first hit among the sci fi and fantasy blockbusters this Summer, and it was quite a journey to get there. The Summer Blockbuster season started in May, and after five big-dollar films have come up short or flat-out flopped, Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey looks like it will triumph at the Box Office. It had an opening weekend domestic tally of $123.5 million, and across the globe it has surpassed $260 million in ticket sales. This one does have a rather hefty budget of $250 million, but unless it has a big drop off in its second week (unlikely), it should at least break even in its theatrical run if not turn a profit (a film usually has to make at least twice its budget in domestic ticket sales or two-and-a-half to three times its budget globally to hit the breakeven point).
Among the other genre blockbusters still in the Top 20, Supergirl slipped just a little bit to Number 9 in the film’s fourth week, but at only $70 million domestically vs. a budget of $180 million, it is still on track for flop status. Disclosure Day slipped to Number 10 in its 6th week, and it might come up short in the theaters as it is currently at $235 million globally vs. a budget of $115 million. The Mandalorian and Grogu seemed to be on track to break even at one point, but with $345 million globally after nine weeks vs. a budget of $165 million, it may lose money. And Master of the Universe could be the master of the financial flops this Summer with a tally of only $113 million worldwide vs. a budget of $170 as it is close to dropping out of the upper rungs of the chart. Streaming Results
The Percy Jackson movies enjoyed a resurgence of popularity, making it in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings the week of their June premieres on Netflix. The Lightning Thief was at the Number 4 slot with an estimated 339 million minutes of viewing, and Sea of Monsters was at Number 9 with 207 million (both of which include views on Disney+). The monster shark film The Meg 2: The Trench hit the Number 5 slot for its premiere on Netflix last week, with 7 million hours viewed across 3.6 million accounts. And for those who thought KPop Demon Hunters was about to drop out of that streamer’s chart when it slipped to Number 10 last week, think again. It rebounded to Number 6, extended its run to 57 weeks in the Top 10. Following are all the genre films from the Netflix Top 10 and the Nielsen Streaming Rankings:
