Sci Fi TV News of Note:
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy TV series that had been in the works at Hulu since it was announced in 2019 is now officially dead according to showrunner Carlton Cuse. In an interview with ScreenRant, he claimed that he is “not working on that any longer”, and went on to say the following:
It was a worthwhile shot to take, because I love that story so much. Even though it didn’t come to fruition, it was really fun to get to think about it a lot, and to reabsorb myself in that story and that world, because it was so brilliant.
He also claimed that it was “an incredibly difficult story to crack” especially for television, but the fact is that the 1981 BBC series did quite a good job, it just needed a bigger budget. A reboot is certainly possible, especially if they stick close to the source material, but it may not be something that interests executives in the entertainment industry, and there seems to be a recent trend of rejecting revivals of older properties (Stargate and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are two good examples). There is no word at this point on whether Hulu might take another stab at this with a different creative team. The original television version is certainly worth a look (more on that one at this link), and the radio series is also a great way to encounter this property (more on that one at this link).
The Emmy nominations for 2026 are out, and sci fi and fantasy shows did pretty well this year. Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay leads the genre shows with 19 noms, followed by Pluribus (18), Spider-Noir (11), Fallout (9), A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (9), Paradise (7), and Stranger Things (7). Production has begun on the Apple TV adaptation of the William Gibson cyberpunk classic Neuromancer as confirmed by a teaser that was recently released by the streamer. That one will likely be targeting a late 2027 premiere.
The animated movie Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender has received a premiere date on Paramount+ of July 25th. You can see the trailer for that one below.
