Opening Weekend: $29,439,929 (North America)
Score: 67% Tomatometer (Based on Critics’ Reviews) | 87% Popcornmeter (Based on Audience Scores)
Critics Consensus: By the power of Grayskull and with a little help from its self-deprecating script and spirited cast, Masters of the Universe is a delightful adventure that finds the humanity in He-Man.
Audience Says: A glossy, action spectacle that wears its heart on its jacked sleeve, Masters of the Universe is a stud of a film.
Was It a Success? The lead character of this film may be known as He-Man, but he certainly did not show much muscle at the Box Office for the film’s opening weekend. It placed at Number 2 in the rankings (behind the latest Scary Movie entry) and pulled in a rather tepid $29 million in receipts across North America. With only $61 million in receipts worldwide through yesterday, it appears that it will not even reach its budget during its theatrical run, and it will even face an uphill battle to turn a profit once it hits streaming.
Should You See It in Theaters? The critics have been rather lukewarm on this film so far, but in general the audience seems to have enjoyed it. For Masters of the Universe fans, it is probably worth shelling out the ticket price while it is still in theaters, but curious onlookers may want to wait until it hits streaming.
