Sci Fi Movies This Week: Weekly column tracking what is coming in the current week in the way of sci fi, fantasy, and horror releases as well as news and updates on genre films, streaming and theatrical.

Premiering This Week:

This is a slow week for sci fi and fantasy movies with only one release of note and not much in the way of news. On Friday, the Brazilian dystopian film The Blue Trail gets its U.S. release in select theaters. This month only has a few more genre entries on the schedule, but things will pick up in May when the Summery Blockbuster Season arrives (watch for an upcoming post on that). You can see highlights for the week below, and you can watch trailers and get info for all the current upcoming sci fi and fantasy films at this link.

The Blue Trail (In Theaters-Limited, Apr 3): In a not-so-distant dystopian future where the government sends seniors to isolated colonies under the guise of boosting the economy, 77-year-old Tereza (Denise Weinberg) decides her story is far from over. Refusing to surrender her independence, she embarks on a journey to pursue the dreams she is not yet ready to abandon. Along the way, she discovers freedom, companionship, and the joys of going wherever the river takes her.

Sci Fi Movie News of Note

The reboot of The Blair Witch Project is moving forward.

In the reboots we don’t need category, work is moving forward with the new Blair Witch Project movie as it has entered the latest set of Production Weekly listings. That comes from Lionsgate and Blumhouse, and will reboot the found-footage horror film for a new generation. Project Hail Mary has passed $330 million globally, and it has become the highest grossing film for Amazon MGM Studios after their merger. It was made on a budget of $200 million, so it has not made it into the black just yet. But it is going on its third weekend in the theaters and is certainly on track for a profitable run. You can see the Box Office results for sci fi and fantasy films from this previous weekend at this link.

John Hannah will be returning to the Mummy franchise, reprising his role as Jonathan Carnahan, brother to Evelyn Carnahan. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will also be returning for that extension to the popular films that kicked off in 1999.
