Starting this month, the Sci Fi TV Highlights post is moving to AxiomsEdgeSciFi.com. This site is more focused on current and upcoming television shows and movies, so it makes sense to have the ongoing post here. CancelledSciFi.com will continution to cover cancellations and renewals as well as monitor the status of the current genre entries with its Cancellation Watch posts, and it will also continue to look back at shows from the past. Sci Fi TV News of Note:
Plans for a new Power Rangers TV series at Disney+ have powered down according to a report from Deadline. The crew that brought us Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been working on that project for over a year, but now the streamer has decided not to go forward with the series. The property is owned by Hasbro, and apparently the show would have been expensive to produce, so the economics did not work out (though you might have thought Disney would just buy out that company so that they would have the rights to all their products). And apparently going cheap and cheesy like the original shows is not an option for the premium streaming services (Netflix also passed on a reboot), so they have decided not to move forward with this one. But the Power Rangers carry plenty of name recognition and a built in audience, which the entertainment industry loves, so expect another venue to tackle this one at some point.
But while Disney+ has decided to move on from the Power Rangers, they have another project ramping up with an anime version of their game Kingdom Hearts. That follows a young boy named Sora who is chosen to wield the mystical Keyblade after his home is destroyed by shadowy creatures known as the Heartless, and it crosses over with several Disney properties. Game creator Tetsuya Nomura will be involved with the series, but no further creatives have been attached at this point. This is a developing story, so stay tuned for updates.
Ridley Scott may be approaching 90 years, but he is certainly keeping busy. He has a new sci fi movie hitting theaters later this month (Dog Stars), and he is also working on an adaptation of the YA fantasy book series The Folk of the Air by Holly Black. Those follow Jude Duarte, a mortal girl raised in the dangerous and enchanting High Court of Faerie after her parents are murdered. Determined to earn power and respect despite being an outsider, Jude becomes entangled in the deadly political intrigues, betrayals, and shifting alliances of the faerie realm, particularly through her volatile relationship with the cruel Prince Cardan. This is in the very early stages at this point, and no additional creative talent has been attached yet. But it expands Amazon’s fantasy offerings which also include The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Legend of Vox Machina, the upcoming Fourth Wing, and more.
It was previously annnounced that the planned Booster Gold TV series would not be going forward at HBO Max, and now two more DC projects have been scrapped. The Suicide Squad spin-off Waller, which would have focused on Amanda Waller, has been cancelled in production as well as Paradise Lost which would have focused on Wonder Woman’s home Themyscira. It is unclear if the failure of Supergirl at the Box Office led to this decision and if James Gunn and Peter Safran may be rethinking the extent of their DC reboot at this time. Meanwhile, Nathan Fillion has been confirmed to voice his Guy Gardner Green Lantern character in the upcoming Mr. Miracle animated series which is still moving forward.
In renewal news, the Sliders-like Big Bang Theory spin-off Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has been renewed for a second season. That one has released four episodes from its first season with its finale set for September 24th.
Disney released several trailers over the past few days including VisionQuest (premieres October 14th), Ahsoka Season 2 (premieres January 20th), Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 3 (premieres November 11th), as well as the FX series American Horror Story Season 13 (premieres September 24th). There are no premieres or finales Monday through Sunday this week, but I did miss that My Adventures with Superman wraps up its third season on August 16th (I thought it dropped all episodes on its premiere date). VisionQuest (Disney+): Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron. His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son, reincarnate. As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron’s influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he’s to survive. Premieres October 14th.
