Sci Fi Box Office: Her Private Hell Enters the Top 20, Avatar: Fire and Ash Tops the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, and More

Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.

Box Office Results

Indie sci fi horror film Her Private Hell entered the Box Office Top 20 for its premiere weekend, but it does not look to enjoy the same success as such recent indie hits as Backrooms and Obsession. It landed at the Number 14 slot with just under $540K across 675 theaters. Its per theater average of $798 was not particularly noteworthy, and this one will likely be hitting home video and streaming soon where it could find more of an audience. The horror film Pinocchio Unstrung (which I saw a trailer for last week, but it was unclear when it was premiering) made it to the Number 15 slot with just under $390K across 505 theaters. That one is also likely looking for more success on home video and digital viewing. Sci fi indie Sheep in the Box was at the Number 26 slot, pulling in a more impressive $10.5K per theater, and perhaps it will get expanded to more cinemas in the coming weeks.

Big-dollar entry The Odyssey continued its journey to hit status, holding at the Number 1 slot and pulling in $90 million domestically over its second weekend. That one is on track to count as a Box Office hit, and you can read more about that at this link. Dropping out of the Top 20 was The Mandalorian and Grogu which slipped to Number 21 in its tenth week. That one will lose money during its theatrical run, but it is now available On Demand and could make up the slack there. Also dropping out was Masters of the Universe which fell to Number 28 in its eighth week, and it currently counts as the biggest flop among this Summer’s big-budget genre entries. It is also available On Demand and it is streaming on MGM+. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 (and a few just outside) based on the weekend results.

Streaming Results

Avatar: Fire and Ash hit the Number 1 slot in the Nielsen Streaming Ranking for movies the week of its premiere on Disney+, pulling in just over 1 billion minutes viewed by their estimates. That one turned a profit at the theaters, and its streaming success will add to its overall tally. Superman also entered that chart at the Number 7 slot with 241 million minutes viewed. That was right before the premiere of Supergirl (these numbers run on about a one month delay), likely spurring interest in the James Gunn film that preceded it. War Machine made a return to the Netflix Top 10 for movies, peaking in at the Number 9 slot with 5.9 million hours watched across 3.2 million households. A sequel for that one was announced last week. Following are all the genre films from the Netflix Top 10 and the Nielsen Streaming Rankings:
