Was It a Success? This Summer has mostly racked up disappointments at the Box Office among the big-budget genre entries, but The Odyssey looks like it will turn that around. It arrived with a rather hefty $250 million budget (the most expensive from this Summer so far), but after two weeks it has already more than doubled that with a current worldwide tally of $667 million. Unless ticket sales drop off the cliff in the coming weeks (very unlikely), this one is on a fast track to count as a hit (a film needs to make at least double its budget based on domestic ticket sales or two-and-half to three times worldwide to reach the break-even point). Apparently epic fantasy has appealed to movie-goers this Summer, and Christopher Nolan has certainly delivered another Box Office money-maker.
Should You See It in Theaters? This one is meant to be seen in the cinema as it is first feature film ever to be shot entirely on IMAX’s 70 mm film cameras. Word is that it takes full advantage of the (very) big screen and the high-def filming, and it will cost extra if you want the full experience because there are only about 25 theaters across the U.S. with the technology to display it as intended. But it sure sounds worth it, and even if you don’t make it to one of those, it certainly makes sense to catch this one in theaters while it is available.
