Sci Fi Box Office: Weekly post tracking the performance of sci fi and fantasy movies in the theaters and on streaming.
Box Office Results
Indie films continued to perform well at the Box Office this past weekend despite competition from the Summer Blockbusters. Backrooms slipped to Number 3 but added another $26 million to its domestic tally, and that is now the highest-grossing film ever from A24 based on its global numbers. Obsession slipped to Number 4, but brought in $25 million in ticket sales across North America, and it is now the top film from Focus Features based on its global tally. Both films have proven quite profitable so far with Backrooms having a budget of only $10 million, and Obsession made for less than one million dollars. Also. the final episode of the indie web series The Amazing Digital Circus was released in theaters this last weekend and it landed at the Number 5 slot with a very impressive $12 million in domestic receipts.
New entry Masters of the Universe bested all of those films on the charts, but that big-budget blockbuster does not look like it is headed for a profitable theatrical run. It was at the Number 2 slot (behind the latest entry in the horror-spoof Scary Movie franchise), and only pulled in $29 million across North America. With a budget close to $200 million and only $56.5 million in global ticket sales so far, this latest attempt to bring He-Man to the big screen could be headed for flop territory. The Mandalorian and Grogu slipped to Number 9 in its third week, adding another $10 million to its domestic total. That one is approaching $300 million globally, but it is seeing a notable drop-off in ticket sales, so it may fall short of turning a profit while in the theaters. Below are all of the genre films from the Top 20 based on the weekend results.

Streaming Results

There was only one genre entry in the latest results from the streaming services, and that was the perennial performer KPop Demon Hunters. It dropped to Number 10 in the Netflix chart, though, and it dropped out of the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the first time since it premiered almost one year ago. Expect a sequel from that and possibly some spin-offs as well. Following are all the genre films from the Nielsen Streaming Rankings and the Netflix Top 10:
