Sci Fi Movies This Week: Weekly column tracking what is coming in the current week in the way of sci fi, fantasy, and horror releases as well as news and updates on genre films, streaming and theatrical.
Premiering This Week:
There are only two films of interest to genre fans hitting the theaters this week, but one of them kicks off the Summer 2026 Blockbuster Season. The Andy Serkis animated entry Animal Farm bows in theaters on Friday, and it certainly seems relevant in our current political environment (you can see our full preview of the Summer 2026 Blockbuster season at this link). But if you are looking for less in the way of big-budget affairs, the horror entry Hokum, starring Severance’s Adam Scott, also arrives in the theaters. You can see highlights for the week below, and you can watch trailers and get info for all the current and upcoming sci fi and fantasy films at this link.
Animal Farm (In Theaters, May 1st): A satirical allegory of revolution and power, Animal Farm traces how a movement for equality is systematically corrupted. As the pigs consolidate control, truth is erased, dissent is crushed, and the farm descends into a ruthless dictatorship—fulfilling Orwell’s warning about the dangers of communism.
Directed by: Andy Serkis
Starring: Seth Rogen, Gaten Matarazzo, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, Laverne Cox, Kieran Culkin, Woody Harrelson, Jim Parsons, Andy Serkis, Kathleen Turner, Iman Vellani
Hokum (In Theaters, May 1st): When reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman (Scott) retreats to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, the staff’s tales of an ancient witch haunting the honeymoon suite take hold of his mind. Soon, disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance draw him into a nightmarish confrontation with the darkest corners of his past.
Directed by: Damian McCarthy
Starring: Will O’Connell, Adam Scott, David Wilmot, Austin Amelio, Florence Ordesh, Peter Coonan, Michael Patric
Sci Fi Movie News of Note

Netflix has given a release date for its upcoming survival sci fi film The Last House which is set to premiere August 7th. Following is the logline for that one:
A family of four are suddenly sealed inside their home with no way out, and they must work to survive against both their dwindling resources and the mysterious, looming threat that is keeping them trapped.
It is being compared to claustrophobic thrillers like Leave the World Behind and 10 Cloverfield Lane, and it comes from director Louis Leterrier (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) and writer Matthew Robinson (Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die). It stars Greta Lee (Tron: Ares) and Wagner Moura (Civil War) and you can see the first image from the film above.

He knew about their personal histories to get some volunteers, but would it work… considering it was his 117th try? Will AI be the world’s preffered reality? It already is…
